Dog Grooming in Curload, Somerset

Cherie Lock - Owner and Sole Groomer
  • After several years in "corporate world" working as a PA and in marketing, a redundancy opened up an opportunity of fulfilling my dream of working with dogs.
  • I am City & Guilds qualified, plus certified in canine health and first aid, therefore owners are reassured that their pet is receiving the very best care.
  • I fully comply with the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and provide for your pet's needs.
  • The nature of my grooming approach means that I have the time, empathy and patience to deal with the more matted, elderly, anxious and health compromised dogs that other groomers are reluctant to treat.
  • My salon is a calm and relaxed atmosphere for your dog as I only groom 1 dog at a time (1:1) or a "dog family". Customers have peace of mind that their pet is receiving my full attention.
  • I do not use cage dryers and I am fully insured.

More about Lock's Dog Grooming....

I operate in a very different way to large branded grooming outlets, shops, mobile groomers and a lot of sole offerings which often have non-qualified staff and/or a time-limited groom.  My prices reflect this, as I am not looking to compete with them and I only look to do a handful of grooms per week.  I've outlined a few differences here which I hope opens peoples minds to 1:1 grooming and the alternative experience that your pet will be receiving.

  • I am fully qualified to City & Guilds standards - this is the UK's number one dog grooming qualification. As an aside, I also passed with 'Distinction'.
  • I undertake an initial 15 minute pet assessment with the customer prior to the groom.   (Please refer to my Grooming Policy for more information).
  • I only perform a maximum of 2 grooms per day (or a family of dogs per day), therefore ensuring that each dog receives my undivided time, kindness and patience.  I do not run a big-branded process line.
  • On arrival, dogs are encouraged to explore their surroundings, sniff around the salon and help themselves to toys whilst I'm setting up.  I operate a "crate free" salon.
  • The grooms are not rushed, as there is no queue of other clients waiting around the corner.
  • As per one of the 5 Animal Welfare Act "needs",  an animal should be able to exhibit its natural behaviours, therefore I do not have dogs standing on the table for several hours.
  • I work holistically, via a consent based approach, at a pace comfortable for the dog. The groom is interspersed with comfort break(s) to stretch their legs via a small walk, have a drink, incorporate some playtime respite or even a little nap!  I understand a dog's body language and how to adapt a groom to reduce stress.  I do not force a dog to do anything it doesn't want to do.
  • I adopt a positive reinforcement approach (treats/rewards) basis, especially for those dogs that are nervous or new to being groomed.  Lets be honest, most dogs are motivated by food, and I find customer's pets a lot more receptive to grooming if there is a tasty treat involved.
  • I often take on older, anxious or matted dogs that other shops and groomers do not have the time for.  I'm able to perform floor grooms for elderly dogs with mobility issues, who are unable to get into the bath or onto a table.
  • Most of my products, shampoos etc are from Earthbath, that contain natural ingredients and are cruelty free.  They are a little more expensive, but I prefer to use ethical products.

In summary, a personal, consistent 1:1 groom from a trusted, qualified professional using holistic techniques is a very different experience from a mass branded groom factory.

Lock's Dog Grooming ETHOS

Imagine being at the dentist.  The dentist has instruments in your mouth and you're unable to talk, they ask you to raise a hand if you're struggling, in pain, are feeling anxious or want the work to stop. There's a problem, you repeatedly put your hand up and it's being ignored. You're feeling agitated, stressed, anxious, angry and upset.  That is what a dog goes through in many grooming situations.  They are unable to verbalise and therefore use body language to express their emotions, and most of the time it's not being read. Groomers are taught in training that:

  1. if a dog is wriggly, put a belly strap on
  2. if it won't accept the dryers, put a hoodie on
  3. if it's biting, put a muzzle on
  4. if it's disabled, put it in a hammock.

All perfectly normal practices but they are, in consent based grooming, classified as "forced".  When I set up my own business I vowed to do things differently.  Therefore my ethos is:-

  • Prioritising welfare and wellbeing over aesthetics.
  • Working at the dog's pace whilst observing body language and emotions.
  • Never using physical pressure ie holding chin fur, grabbing or tightly holding onto legs, paws or tail. All aspects of grooming utilise positive based/reinforcement techniques. Usually food or toys.
  • Any safety aids allow freedom of movement. Groomers helpers, cradles and hammocks have no place in my salon.
  • I do not make dogs stand for the entirety of their groom. Preferring to work around sitting and lying down positions - whatever is more comfortable for the dog.
  • I do try and avoid muzzles if at all possible, as I find it heightens the dog's anxiety. IF muzzles are needed for pressing welfare issues, the dog needs to be muzzle trained first and with agreement of the owner. Grooms are still performed at the dogs pace.
  • Providing respite breaks during the groom, and additional breaks for dogs that need extra help to decompress.
  • Offering honest feedback and educating owners on the best way to desensitise their pet. Including positive based techniques, to help with their groom.
  • Always advocating for dogs in all circumstances.

I invest a lot of time in each session with bonding and desensitising practices.  All grooms are adapted to encourage positive behaviours. Therefore, I'm not the groomer for people who:-

  • groomer hop depending on availability. Continuity is key.
  • are looking for immaculate/polished grooms (most dogs are anxious about some elements of the groom - mainly dryers and face-work).
  • are looking for short time duration slots of under 2 hours.
  • not prepared to embrace my ethos, that the dog's welfare takes priority over owner preferences.

The benefits of having your dog groomed professionally

Professional grooming can greatly improve the cleanliness, health and hygiene of your pet

A reputable groomer will:

  • use the right tools for your dog's coat.
  • utilise quality products based on your dog's coat and skin condition.
  • be skilled in professional brushing which distributes natural oils and clears up dead skin and reduces shedding.
  • prevent coat matting which causes pain and distress to your dog along with infection, skin irritation and parasites.
  • spot the early signs of health issues and parasites; and
  • promote healthy foot structure and reduce infection with regular nail trims.
